RESTYLANE

Restylane was the first hyaluronic acid (HA) filler to be approved by the FDA and enter the aesthetics market. Since then, the product line has expanded to include several HA fillers that can address a wide range of facial contouring concerns.

After years of perfecting his injection technique and trusting Restylane to deliver consistent, natural-looking improvements, facial sculpting expert Dr. Jason Emer considers this HA filler essential to many of his most celebrated combination treatment protocols.

WHAT IS RESTYLANE?

Restylane is a family of dermal fillers that contain hyaluronic acid. These fillers are used to address signs of aging throughout the face and to provide facial feature enhancements, such as lip or cheek augmentation.

Hyaluronic acid is a substance that naturally occurs in the body and functions to keep the skin hydrated and plump. As the aging process progresses, the body produces less HA, which has a noticeable effect on the facial appearance.

You may find that your face has lost volume, that the skin is no longer full and taut, that you have fine lines and wrinkles, and/or that you have under-eye hollows. Restylane injections help mitigate these effects by restoring lost volume and establishing a more robust concentration of HA in the treated area(s).

WHO IS A CANDIDATE FOR RESTYLANE?

Men and women seeking a non-surgical solution for their facial sculpting and/or facial rejuvenation goals can be good candidates for Restylane. Candidates must be over the age of 21 and in good health.
Restylane is intended for facial contouring through augmentation and for reducing the appearance of folds and wrinkles caused by age-related changes to the facial tissue.
Though Restylane is a great treatment option for most people, it is not right for everyone. Some medications, allergies, and medical conditions can exclude patients from candidacy for Restylane. Also, women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should not have a Restylane treatment.
If Restylane isn’t the best way to accomplish your aesthetic goals, alternative treatments will be recommended. The doctor may also advise a treatment approach that combines Restylane with additional complementary cosmetic treatments.

WHAT CAN RESTYLANE TREAT?

Restylane is a versatile treatment option, especially in light of the variety of specialized fillers in this well-established product line. Restylane is commonly used for:
  • Lip augmentation and contouring
  • Increasing volume in the cheeks
  • Filling under-eye hollows
  • Adding volume to the temples
  • Neck lines
  • Hand rejuvenation
  • Nasolabial folds
Since its introduction and throughout the rise of hyaluronic acid fillers to a prominent—or even dominant—position among cosmetic facial enhancement treatments, Restylane has added several targeted formulas to its product line. Each variation has distinct characteristics and applications, allowing providers to better meet the needs of more patients.
The Restylane product line includes:
Restylane can improve dark under-eye circles, plump the lips, and fill facial wrinkles
This filler can add more significant volume than others in the Restylane line. Hand rejuvenation and midface contouring concerns, including cheek augmentation, are often best resolved with Restylane Lyft.
This member of the Restylane family is the first dermal filler approved by the FDA for lip lines and lip augmentation. It has very small HA particles, making it ideal for this delicate area.
Restylane Kysse is particularly effective for smoothing out upper perioral lines and augmenting the lips.
This Restylane filler is often used to correct signs of aging in the lower face. Mild to moderate marionette lines and laugh lines are commonly treated with this Restylane filler.
Like Refyne, Defyne can effectively resolve laugh lines and marionette lines, but this filler is designed to address more severe creases and is intended for deeper injection. It does not migrate and can be a good option for individuals who lead a very active lifestyle. Dr. Emer also often uses Restylane Defyne when treating volume-related issues in the temple area and for augmenting the chin.

WHAT DOES A RESTYLANE PROCEDURE INVOLVE?

Dr. Emer performs Restylane injections right in the office and typically in 30 minutes or less. First, an antiseptic solution will be used to clear the treatment site(s) of oil, debris, or other contaminants.

Restylane contains lidocaine, which provides a numbing effect and reduces discomfort. If you are worried about pain during the injection process, a topical numbing agent can be applied in the treatment area to ease any uncomfortable sensations you might feel during the injections.

Based on your facial anatomy and aesthetic concerns, the doctor will carefully select your injection site(s). Using a very fine needle, Restylane is then injected under the skin to achieve the desired volume increase and contouring improvements.

WHAT TO EXPECT AFTER RESTYLANE INJECTIONS

Each patient responds differently to Restylane filler injections, but recoery is generally short and involves minimal discomfort. Any post-treatment bruising, swelling, or redness should subside within about a week. You’ll be advised to stay out of the sun to keep bruising and swelling to a minimum.

In some cases, no downtime is needed, and you will not need to miss any work. If your treatment includes a greater number of injections, or if you are prone to swelling or bruising, you may want to plan to take a day off to recover.

Blood thinning medications and supplements can prolong the recovery period. As long as it is medically safe for you to do so, it is recommended that you avoid taking blood thinners for about a week prior to your injections. Be sure to talk to the doctor about all of your medications during your consultation, so he can best advise you on how to prepare for your Restylane injections.

WHEN WILL I SEE MY RESTYLANE RESULTS?

You will notice that the treated area(s) appear fuller right away, since the injected product adds instant volume. Over the next several days, improvements will continue. Final results can be expected within seven to 10 days of your injection session.

HOW LONG DOES RESTYLANE LAST?

Restylane can provide six to 18 months of enhancement. Your metabolism, lifestyle, and the type of Restylane used for your treatment will affect how long your results will last. Additional injection sessions can be scheduled at regular intervals to keep you looking your best.

HOW IS RESTYLANE DIFFERENT FROM OTHER HYALURONIC ACID FILLERS?

Many HA fillers have been introduced since Restylane entered the market, and Dr. Emer is meticulous about selecting the right filler for each patient’s unique treatment. He has in-depth knowledge of each filler’s distinct qualities, which allows him to effectively use Restylane alone and/or in combination with other HA fillers such as:

JUVEDERM

Juvederm is another well-known HA filler family. Restylane is more granular than Juvederm, which makes it more cohesive. Juvederm is prone to diffusion once injected, which is an advantage in some cases, but a disadvantage in others.

BELOTERO

This filler is more concentrated than Restylane and typically used for fine, small lines rather than for adding substantial volume, as Restylane can. Restylane is also softer than Belotero.

THREAD LIFTING

The subtle tissue elevation provided by Silhouette InstaLift and NovaThreads rejuvenates sagging, aging skin.

NEUROMODULATORS

Botox, Dysport, Jeuveau, and Xeomin contain a neurotoxin called botulinum toxin type A that can relax folds and wrinkles caused by overactive facial muscles.

ULTHERAPY

This ultrasound-based energy therapy offers skin tightening and collagen stimulating benefits.
